FTC Debates Whether Data Privacy Concerns Warrant Market Wide Rules
Nextgov: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) heard from industry experts, consumer advocates and the public as they are focusing on efforts to protect consumer privacy. While current legislation and regulations provide some protection, there are substantial loopholes for today’s consumer. Companies should look at the impact it may have on their privacy programs and be aware of possible future changes. The public has until October 21 to comment on the proposed rulemaking, which you can find at the federal register.

CPO Magazine: Some, like the Economist, say that data is a company’s greatest asset. This can be true since companies are hacked for their data on a daily basis. One of the largest hacks occurred in 2020 when cybercriminals impersonated Twitter IT employees which led to an elaborate and very embarrassing crypto scam. Humans (as we all know) are complex and even the smartest can be outsmarted. It’s important for companies to manage the human side of risk amongst threats to data. There are various ways to do this such as ensuring an organization has a strong compliance structure and developing a governance culture.
