Stolen data included social security numbers, psychological assessments of students, financial reports and legal documents. The LAUSD Superintendent announced that the ransom would not be paid.

He authorized secret payments to the hackers and covered up the incident from the FTC. Per the Justice Department, “the message in today’s guilty verdict is clear: companies storing their customers’ data have a responsibility to protect that data and do the right thing when breaches occur.”

The Guardian: About 11.2 million Australian customers had their personal information stolen from Optus, the second largest telecommunications provider. While Optus told reporters that the attack did not stem from any form of human error, insiders strongly disagree. With this massive security breach, the government is looking into punitive damages for companies that fail to protect its customers and also overhauling current privacy laws.
