UK privacy watchdog fines Clearview AI £7.5 million for breaking data protection laws
CSO: Clearview AI, has been fined £7.5 million ($9.4 million) by a U.K. privacy regulator. The New York based facial recognition company was charged for breaking data protection laws and ordered the company to cease obtaining personal data of UK residents. The company has collected more than 20 billion images of people’s faces and data from the internet and people were not informed that their images were being used or collected. Clearview AI is also facing lawsuits in other countries, such as France, Italy and America.

The Record: A real life Dr Jekyll and Hyde? Moises Luis Zagala Gonzalez, a cardiologist in Venezuela, created the “Thanos” ransomware builder and other ransomware tools to cybercriminals on the dark web. He even went as far as providing guidance on how to launch the ransomware and get the largest ransom payments from victims, per the DOJ. Zagala faces up to 10 years in prison but his whereabouts are currently unknown.

DeFi Is Getting Pummeled by Cybercriminals
Dark Reading: DeFi platforms have lost a staggering $1.8 billion to cyberattacks in 2021. These platforms promise to replace banks as a secure way to invest in cryptocurrency. Incredibly, 90% of the hacks came from unsophisticated attacks which points to the lax cybersecurity practices in this sector. Just last week, $182 million was stolen from Beanstalk Farms – the fourth largest DeFi hack to date.
