FBI: $6.9 billion lost through internet crimes in 2021
The Record: According to the FBI’s annual Internet Crime Report, a staggering $6.9 billion was lost through internet crimes in 2021. This is an increase of almost $1.7 billion from 2020. These startling increases are collected from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and almost 850,000 complaints were filed throughout the year. The FBI receives an average of 2,300 complaints a day, which is an increase of 7% from 2020. One scam that often goes unreported are romance scams – which accounted for over $956 million in losses from almost 25,000 victims.
Hackers leak ‘new’ docs from Mossad chief after wife’s ‘old’ phone said hacked
Shafaq News: Alleged documents of Mossad Chief (national intelligence agency of Israel) David Barnea have been made public on an anonymous Telegram channel. Personal information, photos, videos and other documents were hacked from an old phone belonging to Barnea’s wife. Reports said that no sensitive information was on the phone and materials in question are old. Media reports are pointing fingers at Iran hackers for the incident.
“It’s coming”: President Biden warns of “evolving” Russian cyber threat to U.S.
CBS News: President Biden warned of potential cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure in the US as Russia relalitates against economic sanctions imposed following the Ukraine invasion. While there is no evidence of a specific cybersecurity attack, Biden stated that “the magnitude of Russia’s cyber capacity is fairly consequential,” addressing the Business Roundtable, an association of some of the nation’s largest corporations. “And it’s coming.”
