Data Breaches Rise By 70% Globally in Q3 2022
Info Security Magazine: Data breaches increased by 70% in Q3 2022 with a total of 108.9 million accounts being compromised, compared to Q2. Russia, France, Indonesia, USA and Spain were the top five countries most affected but the United States remains the single most breached country. These shocking increases in data breaches come after a mild growth in the year’s first half.
‘Complex threat environment’ ahead of midterm elections, top cybersecurity official says
Reuters: As the midterm elections near for our country, election officials have been alerted to safe-proof their voting systems and to be on high alert regarding political violence. This comes on the wake of the attack last week on the husband of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House. Jen Easterly, the director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), told CBS Face the Nation “… that the agency is concerned about a range of threats, including cyber, insider, physical and disinformation even as it sees no specific or credible threats.” The agency is putting out warnings to make sure state and local election staff have what they need to protect their voting systems.
U.S. Treasury Thwarted Attack by Russian Hacker Group Last Month
US News: Killnet, a Russian hacker group, was thwarted in an attempt to break into the US Treasury last month. The incident happened a couple days before similar attacks by Killnet on US financial services firms, said Todd Conklin, cybersecurity counselor to Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo. New procedures have been adopted by the US Treasury Department, which includes sharing IP addresses used in attacks with financial services institutions, sharing information in real time and an overall stronger approach to financial system cybersecurity.
