Crime group hijacks hundreds of US news websites to push malware

Tech Crunch: An unnamed media company has been compromised by a cybercriminal group to deploy malware on several hundred news outlet websites in the US. According to Proofpoint, a cybersecurity company, the media company provides video content and advertising to major news city outlets, including Boston, Chicago, Miami, New York, and Washington DC. The malware prompts website visitors to download a fake browser update and the end goal is financial gain for the cybercriminal group.

After a series of cyberattacks, states look to secure election results websites

NBC News: States are tightening up what might be the most public and endangered parts of their election system: the websites that publish voting results. While state election officials believe there is no real threat that hackers could change a final vote count, a successful cyberattack could threaten public confidence if hackers were able to breach websites that show preliminary totals. But foreign hackers have virtually no chance to change election results as most US voting equipment is not connected to the internet and every state conducts its own elections.

New pro-China disinformation campaign targets 2022 elections

Axios: Researchers have announced that a Chinese hacking group, DragonBridge, is attempting to sow division in the US. Election officials have been on high alert for foreign disinformation campaigns to further divide the country in the days before the midterm elections. The FBI has warned political party headquarters that they could be targets of Chinese government hackers, who are using fake social media accounts and falsifying news articles. The good news is that while DragonBridge is well-resourced and aggressive, they are failing to get engagement and is proving that election interference is no longer just contained to Russia and Iran.
